Every year on the 1st of April, Reading is Funny Day reminds us that books are more than just words on a page, they are a source of laughter, imagination, and adventure. With more children turning to screens for entertainment, it has never been more important to show them that reading can be just as fun and exciting. Few understand this better than children’s author B. Ware, who has made it her mission to reignite a passion for books through humor and engaging storytelling.

Since the release of her debut children’s novel, WARNING: Magic Can Be Dangerous!, B. Ware has been visiting schools across the country, offering free full-day sessions to inspire young readers. She has reached over 20,000 children so far, and with the recent launch of WARNING: May Contain Dragons, she is determined to continue spreading the joy of reading. “By visiting schools in the local community and giving children a reason to get excited about reading again, I’m hopeful I can make a difference,” she explains.
B. Ware’s Words of WARNING collection is designed to hook even the most reluctant readers by blending humor with thrilling, magical adventures. In WARNING: May Contain Dragons, young protagonist Willow embarks on a quest to rescue her little brother from what she believes to be a dragon, leading to a wild and hilarious journey. Meanwhile, WARNING: Magic Can Be Dangerous! follows 11-year-old Tyler as he struggles to control his newfound magical powers, causing chaos in the process. These stories are filled with mischievous fun, proving that books can be just as entertaining as video games or movies.

Understanding that school budgets often limit access to author visits, B. Ware has committed to offering all of her visits free of charge. “During my workshops, I’ve seen firsthand the impact a visit from a local author can have and witnessed children falling in love with reading again whilst getting stuck in to writing stories of their own,” she says. Her efforts even extend beyond storytelling with her latest book featuring cover art by a young illustrator, Theo Jarvis, whom she met during a school visit. Inspired by his creativity, she invited him to design the cover of WARNING: May Contain Dragons, showcasing the power of books to encourage artistic expression as well.
Reading is Funny Day is the perfect opportunity to celebrate the joy of books. Whether through reading aloud, writing funny stories, or diving into a book that sparks laughter, there are countless ways to make reading a fun and engaging experience. B. Ware’s work proves that books are not just about education, they are about adventure, humor, and inspiring young minds.
