Halloween isn’t the only reason why 31st October is a day full of mystery, wonder and a touch of the supernatural. It is also National Magic Day, a celebration of the art of illusion and one of the world’s most famous magicians, Harry Houdini.
Originally established as Houdini Day in 1927 by the Society of American Magicians to commemorate Houdini’s death, the occasion has since evolved into a wider celebration of magic and the performers who continue to inspire awe and amazement. Nearly a century after his death, his legacy continues to inspire magicians, storytellers and anyone captivated by the impossible.
To mark National Magic Day, we’d like to celebrate one of our wonderful middle-grade authors, Gareth White. Gareth grew up believing magic was real and now spends his days proving it! As a professional magician and balloonist, he has spent years creating magical moments for audiences across the UK, from living rooms and schools to theatres and festivals. You can see where Gareth is performing next here.

Gareth’s passion for magic doesn’t stop on the stage. His years of performing and creating wonder for audiences shine through in his writing, bringing a sense of mystery, adventure and possibility to every page.
Released in January 2026, Mystery at Shinglepits High is a wickedly fun middle-grade adventure that follows Flick and Joey as they venture beneath the floorboards of their Edinburgh school to discover a hidden world. There, the two must face an evil witch, uncover ancient secrets and unlock magic beyond their wildest imaginations.
This National Magic Day, why not celebrate the wonder of magic by discovering Gareth’s enchanting middle-grade adventure? Perfect for readers who love hidden worlds, spooky secrets and unforgettable adventures, Mystery at Shinglepits High is an ideal read for the Halloween season.
