Whilst known for crafting quirky, diverse characters in spell-binding urban fantasy tales, A. W. Jackson’s creativity doesn’t stop at the page. When not dreaming up magical misfits and exciting adventures, Jackson can be found belting out show tunes or stepping into character onstage. Their passion for storytelling spills into multiple forms—from writing novels to performing, singing, and even crafting original musicals. This blend of artistic pursuits has paved the way for a new project that’s as bold and unapologetically fun as its title suggests. In their latest venture, Karma is a B*tch Called Steve, Jackson fuses humour, heart, and music to tell a story rooted in personal experience and theatrical flair.
A. W. Jackson says,
‘As well as writing, my creativity has manifested itself in acting and singing. This trifecta compelled me to combine my interests to write and star in a musical. I never used to be interested in musicals. I didn’t think they were my ‘thing,’ but now I realise just how wrong I was. Since taking music lessons and diving into the world of musical theatre over the past two years I’ve realised that a camp old sing song is exactly my cup of tea. Inspired by stage performances such as Mean Girls, Heathers and Dear Evan Hansen, I decided to take an idea I had for a book and turn it into a musical. When I originally envisioned Karma is a B*tch Called Steve, I always wanted it to end in a big song and dance, so I think it was always destined to become a musical. The idea for the story is partially based on my own experiences growing up and how I always looked to the future knowing that one day they’d feel silly for belittling someone who had grown up to become talented and successful (though I’m still waiting on the success). Steve is the embodiment of what I think could’ve happened in a toxic version of said scenario where money and power have no limitations to someone. This begs to question the difference between karma and revenge and how someone’s experiences can change their definition.
After writing the story, I decided to enlist the help of my friend and singing coach Callum Etherington, a singer and pianist master in his own right. Together we wrote five original songs and decided to plan a debut at this year’s Manchester Fringe Festival. Our hope is to successfully debut the musical, gain some feedback, expand the show and take it to even more festivals in 2026!
Karma is a B*tch Called Steve is a campy comedy all about how childhood bullying can have lasting effects on someone. Steve is now an ultra-famous actor, singer and all-round superstar, but life wasn’t always so easy. Steve’s school life was hell – he was bullied by his peers for being different, and a member of the LGBTQ+ community. Steve has tried to put those dark years behind him, but as his childhood bullies begin to sell fake stories to the press about them being best friends, he is driven to revenge by any means necessary. With a flurry of songs and a touch of magic, Steve will truly blur the lines between karma and revenge.’
Karma is a B*tch Called Steve will debut at Squad House, located in Pear Mill, Stockport, on the 10th, 11th, and 12th of July 2025, at 8:30pm. Get your tickets here!
